Shanghai Peace Hotel
The Shanghai Peace Hotel was built in 1929. It's 12 stories high and features a gothic style from the Chicago School. The structure has granite outer walls and a pyramid-like bronze-tiled green tower. The hotel has revolving doors, spacious halls and corridors, Italian marble floors and pillars, ancient style bronze lamps and unique, international suites which feature the themes of nine countries. The magnificent building exemplifies primitive simplicity and has been honored as the number one building in the far east.
Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum in Nanjing
Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum is located in east Nanjing's Zhongshan Mountain. The magnificent complex is built along the mountain slope. The whole mausoleum area is shaped like a huge bell. The top is a half-moon shaped square at the foot of mountain. From foot to top, the mausoleum contains a square, stone arch, grave path, mausoleum gate, pavilion, ritual hall and grave. Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum is a perfect combination of Chinese and western architectural styles. The mausoleum naturally merges with the grandeur of Zhongshan Mountain by using large areas of plantation and wide stairs. It has been honored as the number one mausoleum in the Modern History of Chinese Architecture.
The Great Hall of the People
Located to the west of Beijing's Tiananmen Square, the Great Hall of the People is a major symbolic structure where Chinese leaders and the masses gather for political and diplomatic activities. Built in 1959, the Great Hall of the People covers an area of more than 170,000 square meters. The green and yellow glazed tiles, high pillars and well-arranged buildings create a stately, magnificent image on Tiananmen Square. The front gate of the Great Hall of the People, which faces Tiananmen Square, is decorated with 12 25-meter-high marble pillars from which hang the national emblem. At the back of the central hall is a huge auditorium, which is 76 meters wide and 60 meters long. The north wing is a grand banquet hall with 5,000 seats. There are more than 100 halls and meeting rooms in the Great Hall of the People, each with its own unique characteristics. The architectural style of the Great Hall not only preserves the Chinese tradition, but also incorporates influences from western structures.
Beijing Fragrant Hill Hotel
Located in Fragrant Hill Park in western Beijing, the hotel was built in 1982 and designed by the famous American-Chinese architect Ieoh Ming Pei. The hotel features Chinese gardens and functions as a modern tourist destination. The facility was given an honorary award by the American Academy of Architecture.
New Library of Tsinghua University
Established in 1991, the new library connects harmoniously with the old library built in 1919 and 1931. Together, the old and new libraries comprise the largest structure in the central area of the campus. The New Library of Tsinghua University successfully demonstrates how old and new buildings can coexist harmoniously. This building was nominated as a top ten architectural structure of Beijing in the 1990s.
Shanghai Jin Mao Tower
At a height of 420 meters, the highest building in China has 88 stories in its main body. It is the third highest building in the world and covers an area of 290,000 square meters, Jin Mao Tower perfectly combines Chinese architectural style with modern science. The tower has set many Chinese architectural records and is a classic example of modern construction. It is a first-level structural project completed mostly by the Chinese.
