SHANGHAI, April 19 (Xinhua) -- A concentration camp exhibition showcasing World War II-era crimes committed by Nazi forces opened in Shanghai on Thursday. The exhibition on the Auschwitz concentration camp will be on long-term display at the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum (SJRM), said Chen Jian, the curator of the museum. Thirty display boards illustrating the process of establishing the camp as well as acts of brutality committed by Nazi soldiers are shown in the exhibition, said Chen. Video records and recreated camp items, such as prisoners' uniforms and cages where prisoners were kept and abused, are also included in the exhibition, marking the first time such items have been shown outside the camp, he said. It is the first time for the exhibition to be on display in China, he added. The exhibition was co-organized by the SJRM and the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum. The Auschwitz concentration camp, a network of concentration and extermination camps located in Poland, was the largest such camp constructed by the Nazis, and about 1.1 million people were killed there. Among the victims, over 90 percent were Jewish. Thursday marks the 69th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. On April 19, 1943, several hundred young Jews decided to take up arms against the occupying Germans, resolving to fight rather than face near-certain death in the Nazis' "Final Solution," a plan to exterminate the Jewish people.
