China's First Blood Bank Opens in Guangzhou2012-4-28 10:39:00 From: http://english.chinese.cn
A "Blood Bank" project which is aimed at establishing a volunteer platelet donor data bank was officially launched in Guangzhou recently. This is the first one of its kind in China.
Guangzhou is one of the largest medical centers in China, boasting an annual amount of nearly one hundred million ml of clinical blood use, ranking second in the country, second only to Beijing. As with the red blood cells and white blood cells, platelets are one of the elements of blood, and constitute a key component of blood coagulation. At present, Guangzhou has a great demand for platelets. It is often in times of life-threatening emergency that platelets are needed, and only homologous platelets can be used. Moreover, the storage time of machine-collected platelets is 5 days. All these factors make the establishment of a volunteer platelet donor bank an urgent matter. It is reported that through the establishment of the "Blood Bank", Guangzhou will organize a 1,000-people volunteer platelet donor bank. The Guangzhou Blood Center will input personal information of those who have registered at the Blood Bank as volunteers into its database for further management. According to actual demand, the Blood Center will irregularly ask the volunteers via phone calls or SMS to the Center or locations that are equipped with platelet-collected machines for platelet collection.
