Charlotte Bronte's 1847 love story "Jane Eyre" is one of the most read literature works in the world. For more than a century, its heroine has been admired by female readers worldwide as a spiritual idol. The romance between Jane and the master of Thornfield Hall, Edward Rochester has been adapted into various art forms since the 1934 film. This June, a Chinese adapted drama of the same name debuted at Beijing's National Center For the Performing Arts, and caused a stir. Now the famous heroine welcomes its second star. The theme music of the 1970 film "Jane Eyre", and the revolving stage bring the audience members back to 19th-century England. A governess goes to work for a moody employer, discovers some dark secrets and warms his heart, meanwhile finding her true self. It is hard to count how many actresses have interpreted the intelligent, thoughtful, forthright, calm and sometimes tactless female character. Now actress Chen Shu has taken up the challenge of replacing pregnant Yuan Quan, who starred in the first production. Chen Shu, as Jane Eyre, said, "Jane Eyre became my teenage idol because of her fortitude, courage and her commitment to life and love. I dedicated myself to the inner performance and I wish I can impress the audience members with my portrayal of Jane's character." Wang Luoyong, the first Chinese star in a Broadway musical, is again playing the short-tempered but inconsolable lord of Thornfield Hall. He regards the performance as a journey of self-discovery. Wang Luoyong, as Edward Rochester, said, "Playing this role is like experiencing a man's life, from naive to mature... his thoughts about money, career and love. Also learning that equality between men and women and respect are the essentials of a relationship. I take the role as a course in finding my true self, and the second run gives me more chance to examine my performance." To director Wang Xiaoying, putting this literary classic onto the stage is like a dream come true. Without much time to spend in rehearsal, he gives credit to Chen Shu. Wang Xiaoying, director, said, "The first round showing was so successful that I was worried about Chen Shu. But she is inspirational and diligent and adds her understanding and perspective to the role. We are confident about the new Jane and we can't wait for the feedback." "Jane Eyre" runs at the National Center for the Performing Arts through December 23rd. Total:1 Page: 1
