Several thousand years ago, there lived on the Central Plains several tribes. The most famous ones were the Yellow Emperor and Yandi's tribes, which were two brothers. Another strong tribe was the Jiuli tribe in Eastern China, with Chiyou as their chief.
Chiyou had eighty-one brothers. They all had iron heads and arms as strong as copper. They also possess magic powers. Their weapon-making skills were also very advanced. As a result they often invaded other tribes. Chiyou invaded Yandi's tribe and defeated them. Therefore, the Yellow Emperor and other tribal leaders joined the war against Chiyou at the request of Yandi. The two tribes had a famous battle at a place called Zhuolu. At the beginning of the war, Chiyou was beginning to win with the help of strong metal weapons and brave soldiers. However, the Yellow Emperor took the upper hand when he invited dragons and other divine beasts into the war. Chiyou used his powers to control the wind and rain to block the chasing of the Yellow Emperor. The Yellow Emperor then invited the god of drought to drive away the rain and clouds. Chiyou again filled the world with fog, which confused the army of the Yellow Emperor. But the latter invented the south-pointing chariot to locate directions. Eventually Chiyou and his eighty-one brothers were caught and killed. Later, the Yellow Emperor won the respect of all the tribes thus becoming their leader. Legend had attributed many inventions and discoveries to the Yellow Emperor, such as building pavilions, boats, carts and writing, music and mathematics. His wife Luozu also invented the umbrella and taught people to raise silkworms and weaving silk. Nowadays, the Chinese call themselves descendents of the Yellow and the Yan Emperors.
