King You was the last King of the Western Zhou Dynasty during the 8th century B.C. During his reign, the good-for-nothing King You indulged in Baosi, one of his concubines, and neglected all his duties for the State. A famous story about the King was that "the sovereign rulers are fooled by the beacon fire."

Baosi was highly honored but she never cracked a single smile. King You tried many ways to put a smile on her face, but failed over and over again.

One day the two were touring Mt. Lishan. The King explained the function of the beacon towers built on the mountain. At that time, beacon towers are built to send messages to sovereign rulers, in time of the State facing outside invasion. The Dukes and Princes would come to the rescue as soon as they see the beacon fire lit but Baosi was doubtful of this. So the King ordered the fire to be lit on the beacon towers. In a split second, the flames of the fire lit up the sky and the sovereign rulers moved their troops immediately to Mt. Lishan. They only found the king and Baosi drinking festively and left feeling fooled. But Baosi burst into laughter, when she saw the annoyed faces of the Haughty Dukes and Princes and the noisy returning troops. Later, King You repeated his joke.

In 771 BC , after King You had replaced his queen with Baosi , the capital was then attacked by the joint force of the former queen's father, who was the powerful Marquess of Shen , and the barbarians. Beacons fires were lit but no troops came to their rescue any more. Baosi was captured away and King You was killed. The Western Zhou Dynasty then collapsed for a beauty's smile.
