At the age of seven or eight, he could hum Peking Opera episodes, and perform Peking Opera and some songs with the Erhu fiddle.

In June, 1949, Lei went to the China Movie Orchestra, focusing on composition. That was when he entered the movie circle.
For over 30 years, Lei composed more than 100 movie songs. He insisted on learning from folk artists and studying regular people's daily lives. He composed a great number of works with his unique style. The tunes he composed for movies reflect the life of minority ethnic groups.
