Peng Xiuwen, Chinese conductor and composer, comes from Hubei. He is a master of Chinese folk music, and the chief conductor of China Broadcasting National Orchestra.
Peng Xiuwen studied folk instruments, like the erhu, balloon guitar since childhood. In 1949, he graduated from Business Special Training School, and in 1950, he worked for Chongqing National Radio. In 1952, Peng Xiuwen was transferred to the Central Broadcasting National Orchestra to be its conductor and composer. With all the faculties' efforts, they formed the original formation of China national symphony orchestra. In the 6th World Youth Arts Competition held in Moscow in 1957, conducted by Peng Xiuwen, the national orchestra performed the "Moonlight Over Spring River". However, "Golden Snakes Dancing Crazily" got the golden prize. In 1981 he was invited by the Hong Kong Orchestra to be a guest conductor. In the same year, he became the art guide of a Folk Troupe of China Radio Arts Troupe. One year later, this troupe went to Hong Kong to perform. In 1983, Peng Xiuwen became the chairman of the Folk Troupe of China Radio Arts Troupe. Peng Xiuwen's conducting styles is to put emotions into the music. Under his conduction, the Folk Troupe of China Radio Arts Troupe reached a high level, and became the most prestigious national orchestra troupe in China. Peng Xiuwen made great contributions in Chinese folk music. He created many compositions, such as: "The Moonlight Over the Spring River", "Reflection of the Moon On the Water", "Dance of Yao Tribe", "Full Moon and Blossoming Flowers" etc. He tried to mix foreign compositions with Chinese traditional instruments, like Beethoven's "Ruins of Athens", Debussy's "cloud" etc. After the 80s, Peng Xiuwen created many more grand folk compositions, which enriched the varieties of Chinese folk music.
