Hu Songhua was born to a Manchu family in Beijing in 1930. The "Song of Harvest" brought him fame, and since 1952, he began to perform in Central National Song and Dance Troupe.
Long before, Hu Songhua had showed rich interests in the music of Chinese minority group. In 1952, a grand music and dance epic entitled "The East Is Red" needed a Mongolian soundtrack, as a result, this task handed to Hu Songhua who was familiar with Mongolia. Recalling his beloved life in the grassland, Hu Songhua decided to adopt the way of Mongolians to express feeling. Consequently, he sang "The Song of Praise" which raised thousands of audiences' strong feelings that was deep in their hearts. This song became so popular that it becomes the representative work of Hu Songhua. In 1992, Hu Songhua made up a production unit on his own to shot a musical art film that contains 12 episodes. He was in charge of the chief-director, chief supervisor, and also the leading role. His wife, the famous dancer, Zhang Manru, was in charge of the chief-planner and chief-producer. This film reflected the excellent traditional art of Chinese minority group, and it was enjoyed by a great number of audiences. For many years, Hu Songhua collected many folk songs in more than 40 ethnic groups and leant arts. Gradually, he formed his own style.
