Zhuxian Town of Henan Province is best known for its age-old woodblock New Year paintings, which originated in the Tang Dynasty and flourished in the Song Dynasty. In the paintings' heyday of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, there were as many as more than 300 New Year painting workshops in the area and their works featured a wide ranged of subjects, including folktales, heroic figures and various gods, etc. The most striking features of Zhuxian Town New Year Paintings are delicate structures, bold lines, exaggerated images and bright colors. Special attention has been paid to the pigments used in these paintings. As the pigments are decocted with traditional Chinese medicine and other ingredients, the colors are bright and steadfast for a long time.
