Yu Zhiding (ca.1647-1709) was a Chinese painter during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) . His style name was Shangji and pseudonym Shenzhai. Yu Zhiding was from Jiangdu, in today'sYangzhou of Jiangsu Province. He was particularly famous for painting human figures. A famous portraitist of the Qing period, Yu Zhiding portrayed a number of historic figures of his time. Many notable people in the capital, most of whom were officials and royal family members, all requested Yu Zhiding to paint their figures. In addition, Yu was also noted for his landscapes, as well as flower and birds. Having learned from Lan Ying, he was famous for influent brush-strokes and was prominent at that time. Depicted in this painting is a scene of red peach flowers, green willows and a ripply spring river. On the left side of the picture is the suburb with faint outlines of thatched cottages and flourishing trees and flowers. In the middle are a hale and hearty man and two lovely kids standing nearby. There is a peach flower grove in the distance and a farmer driving cattle to plow in the field. The background of the picture is the vigorous spring scenery in farming time, expressing the beautiful spring in its full play. The protagonist in the picture is a royal official at the age of almost seventy. He is standing on the river bank looking straightly ahead, with a straw hat on head, right hand stroking his beard and left hand behind his back. The figure in the painting is lifelike and vivid. Two children are standing by, one holding a stick, the other carrying books on his back.
