KATHMANDU, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- Training for women Journalists in Nepal's southern Terai region ended on Thursday in central Janakpur district. A total of 25 women journalists from the Terai region have been trained on Personal Security, Human Rights Fundamentals, Basic Journalism Skills, Conflict and Gender Sensitive Journalism and Gender Based Violence, a report from the Office in Kathmandu of the United Nations Educational United Nations Educational, Scientific and Culture Organization (UNESCO) said Thursday. According to the UNESCO report, hoping that training would help female journalists to protect themselves and reduce the amount of violence towards them, UNESCO Kathmandu and the Nepal Press Institute put together a very innovative training program divided into two phases, one basic and one advanced, each of them made up of theoretical and practical modules. The training concluded Thursday in Janakpur district is the second and last phase (Oct. 25 - Nov. 5) of a four-month-long training course exclusively for women journalists. During the training, two-thirds of the journalists admitted to have been at some point victim of threats or harassment. The attacks ranged from intimidation to physical violence, UNESCO Kathmandu said, adding that a high number of incidents involving female journalists receiving threats because of stories they have written or interviews they have done often goes unreported. The newly formed group of women journalists will be offered internships and work opportunities within different Media Houses in the country at the end of the course, UNESCO Kathmandu said.
