BRUSSELS, April 19 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese and Belgian universities are seeking further cooperation with each other to increase mobility among students from both sides as part of an intensive people-to-people exchange program unveiled this week in Brussels. The VUB (Vrije Universiteit Brussel), a well-known Dutch-speaking university located in Brussels, on Thursday signed a cooperation agreement with Chinese service center for scholarly exchange, which is affiliated to China's education ministry, in a bid to better facilitate the enrollment of Chinese students. On Thursday, the university also hosted a 50-member delegation of directors and deans from nearly 20 top Chinese universities, aiming to build connections and pave the way for future cooperation. Founded in 1831, VUB boasts over 11,000 students, 2,400 of which are international. "We expect to promote more contacts with Chinese partners and create more mobility for our students," VUB's deputy rector Prof. Jean-Pierre De Greve told Xinhua. The event was part of the China-EU high-level people-to-people dialogue, co-launched by Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong and EU culture and education commissioner Androulla Vassiliou here on Wednesday. The dialogue, or the so-called "third pillar" following the established high-level economic and trade dialogue and the high-level strategic dialogue between China and the EU, was designed to further cooperation in fields of education, youth, research and multilingualism. During Liu's short visit to KU Leuven earlier on Wednesday, another well-known Belgian university, she also announced that Chinese government would add 25 more scholarships for the university's students to study in China for one year. Also on Wednesday in Brussels, China's education ministry signed an agreement with Flemish education and training ministry to advance practical cooperation in areas such as mutual recognition of certificates and diplomas, and offering government scholarships to each other.
