In order to promote further Chinese teaching and cultural activities by Confucius Institute deeper into academic study, Confucius Institute at Mickiewicz University has carried out a wide range of lecture and seminar series on Chinese culture, on basis of the advantage of native teachers of Chinese.

On May 10, 2012, following the second academic lecture "Role of Music in Ancient China", there came the third academic lecture "Entering Theater of Peking Opera" by Confucius Institute at Adam Mickiewicz University, thus starting the series of lectures on Peking Opera.

"Entering Theater of Peking Opera" is the first lecture of the series about the art of Peking Opera, Dr. hab. Maurycy Gawarski, who once studied theory of Peking Opera at Beijing Peking Opera Academy, as the speaker of the lecture.

First, Mr. Maurycy Gawarski introduced Sheng, Dan, Jing and Chou, different characters in Peking Opera, singing mode and mask, and Singing, reciting, acting and martial arts performing, the four basic performing skills in Chinese traditional operas. Then he showed the varieties of martial arts, makeup and rehearse with the help of the film he made in a Beijing Theater of Peking Opera when he studied in Beijing. This helped the audience with a very intuitive understanding of Peking Opera.

Next, Mr. Maurycy Gawarski gave an introduction to Mei Laifang, famous Peking Opera star, with a long piece of classic Peking Opera aria, during which he added from time to time detailed explanation. In order to gave detailed explanation, Mr. Maurycy Gawarski played concert by amateur actors of Peking Opera in Beijing he recorded, which carried the audience away into Beijing lanes Hutong, touching authentic traditional Chinese culture.

Like the previous ones, when the lecture ended, some audience continued to talk with the speaking, wishing to know more about Peking Opera.

Students from Confucius Institute, faculty of sinology of Adam Mickiewicz University and other colleges, students from Chinese classes at high schools and other people attended the lecture. At the end of the lecture, a lot of audience still stayed discussing with the speaker about Peking Opera. They said the lecture series by Confucius Institute were very awarding in further understanding China, hoping Confucius Institute would offer more and better such academic lectures.
