On April 26, 2012, Prof. Weihong Yan, Director of Confucius Institute at Pfeiffer University, was invited to offer a lecture on Confucianism to the Chinese class at Marvin Ridge High School of Union County, North Carolina. In the lecture, Prof. Yan mainly talked about Confucius' core concepts of "benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and trustworthiness". By using examples in the daily life to explain Confucius' philosophies, he made the lecture interesting and easy to understand. Prof. Yan also shared with the students Confucius' philosophies about education and life through Confucius' quotations, like "Learning without thought is labor lost; thought without learning is perilous."; "When I walk along with two others, they may serve me as my teachers."; "If a man keeps cherishing his old knowledge, so as continually to be acquiring new, he may be a teacher of others."; "Do not do to others what you would not wish done to yourself" etc. "Confucius emphasized the importance of being thirsty for knowledge and being open-minded. Thousands years later, Steve Jobs said 'Stay hungry, stay foolish.' Both reflect the same philosophy of life." Prof. Yan said. At the end of the lecture, he also let the students watch a small part of the movie "Confucius".
