"Hello. My name is Joshua, I'm thirteen years old. I'm a British secondary school student. I study in Cornwallis Academy, year 9. I like Olympics. Because Olympicsis a worldwide sports event." In Cornwallis Academy's lecture theatre, UK, although it's his first time facing cameral, Joshua Doran spoke in a clear and resonant voice to express his feelings and blessings for London Olympics to Chinese audiences. All member of the filming crew were surprised and delighted at hearing fluent Chinese from this 13 years old British boy. Cornwallis Academy has successfully joined the 2012 Olympics Network and is now officially part of the Get Set network.The Academy demonstrated a commitment to the Olympics and Paralympic Values to inspire learners of all ages and abilities to get involved in value-based projects and activities. And the Academy has the opportunity to submit video footage, which could be displayed on the big screens around the country in between events. Recently, the filming crew of China Central Television Channel Five (CCTV5), leaded by director PengFu, came into Cornwallis Academy to take deep and detailed interviews aboutthe influence of Olympicsin the school. At mandarin class,students were learning how to express their feeling to give speech of "Being a gold medalist" and designed a gold medal for their favorite sport. Students all enjoyed Mandarin lessons of a whole month's study on theme of Sports and Olympics, such asMy Ideal job for Olympics; hand crafts and performances etc. activities, students not only have mastered the vocabulary and sentence patterns, but also have grown huge interest in the song of "Beijing Welcomes You." Ryan Gathorne said:" Learning Mandarin is so enjoyable! I find it really fun and who wouldn't want to learn this fantastic language." The lively and warm atmosphere of the class has enabled the filming crew to truly experience students' passion of learning Chinese and participating in the Olympics. They were amazed by students' creative ideas and cooperation work in group to design a gold medal for Olympics. After that, the crew also visited sports class, dance studio, plazas in the school, etc.They filmed how the Olympics integrated into school life from different angles. In the final interview, David Simons, the Academy Principal, not only talked about changes that the Olympics taken to school, but also fully affirmed the benefits of learning mandarin. He said: "Learning Chinese isnot only about language itself but also opens a door to Chinese culture. Learning Chinese even helps students to learn English better, which helps to go beyond the language learning barrier." The arrival of the crew not only brings studentsa different opportunity to show their Mandarin learning progress, to experience China, but also to understand the importance of learning Chinese in their future. After being interviewed, KirstyJones from year 8 said:" After I have been filmed, I know what learning mandarin can do for you. So I don't think that I'll every give it up!". Although the crew had left the Academy, students'enthusiasm of learning mandarin and participating in the Olympicsis getting much higher than before.
