Passing down traditional culture: Folk music revival2011-11-10 16:28:00 From: CNTV
Every ethnic group longs to pass their unique culture down to the next generation. And today, we'll take you to Fujian Province to see how some people there are putting traditional opera on digital film, while others are teaching folk music to kids from an early age. This is a performance of shifan music, a traditional folk genre in Fujian Province. On weekends, the old artists will come to teach at the fourth primary school of Taijiang district in Fuzhou. In 2006, shifan music was listed as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage. Now, there's a training program established at the school that aims to save the endangered music performing skills. Wen Lixin, a primary school student, said, "I'm playing Yehu. It's beautiful and I really enjoy playing it with my classmates." Chen Yingmu, a successor of Shifan Music, said, "Shifan Music is the treasure of Fuzhou culture. I'm so happy these children are learning it, and I hope more children will carry on the tradition." And as the kids take up their instruments, Chinese film director Feng Xiaoning is taking up his camera. He plans to film performances of Fujian's classic Chinese opera style, Liyuan opera, and put them on the big screen in Quanzhou city. Feng Xiaoning said, "It's a great opportunity for me to absorb things from a traditional art form. To shoot the film is to pass down our culture. As a director, it's my responsibility to record these beautiful and precious art forms and let the next generation carry it on." Wang Renjie, script writer, said, "The performances are totally designed according to the requirements of a stage performance. We also used some film methods that may be helpful to make it popular." No matter whether teaching children folk music or combining traditional Liyuan opera with digital film, people are paying more attention to the preservation of traditional culture. Total:1 Page: 1
