Sex education lacking: report2011-11-14 15:47:00 From: Xinhua
Student in Guangdong Province don't have enough knowledge of safe sex, concluded a report released at the 9th Guangzhou Sex Culture Festival, which started yesterday. The report said less than 3 percent of middle school students in Guangdong Province have had sexual intercourse. Of these students, nearly 14 percent didn't take any contraceptive measures. The report, based on a survey of more than 1,000 junior middle and high school students in the province, also said about 30 percent of the students support sex before marriage provided it is consensual. Among those interviewed, 35 percent said they had never had any sex education while the 48 percent who did get such education criticized it as "too conservative," according to the report. Zhang Feng, director of the Guangdong Provincial Population and Family Planning Commission, told Nanfang Daily yesterday that: "Many teachers worry about being considered "dirty" by parents and kids, or are too shy to talk about sex in front of students, which is a big mistake." The report found that the most understood words in the "sex knowledge dictionary" were "kiss" and "love" while 27 percent of the respondents admitted they had no idea that "a fetus lives in a woman's uterus," the newspaper said. Most survey respondents said they learn about sex from their friends and nearly 11 percent acknowledged they know about sex from pornographic websites, according to the newspaper, which cited the report. "Sex education definitely should be far more than physical knowledge, it must also include psychology and social relationships. The schools should fill in the blank," Zhang said. Zhang told the newspaper that his commission plans to cooperate with provincial education authorities in order to conduct a bigger survey on sex health education in Guangdong.
