ACCRA, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Huawei Technologies of China on Tuesday handed over a fully equipped Information Communication Technologies (ICT) laboratory to Ghana's premiere university, the University of Ghana, Legon, in the capital.

The 200,000-U.S. dollar laboratory built for the Faculty of Engineering Sciences is expected to enhance the teaching and learning of ICT by tutors and students of the faculty.

Huawei also entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the university on behalf of the faculty.

This is to allow Huawei staff to visit the engineering faculty regularly on technical assistance, and the supply of logistics, while students of the faculty would also be accepted on industrial attachment with the company and also employment where applicable.

Chinese Ambassador to Ghana Gong Jianzhong said the donation did not only demonstrate Huawei's high sense of corporate social responsibility and commitment to enhance ICT education in Ghana, but would also showcase the brotherly friendship between China and Ghana.

He expressed delight that the Chinese community in the West African country was contributing its quota significantly to Ghana' s infrastructural development, industrial transformation, industrial relations and education.

Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana Ernest Ayeetey said the ICT facility came in at the right time to meet one of the numerous needs of the faculty established nine years ago.

He believed that as the country was committed to building an ICT-driven economy, computing engineering was well-placed in the University of Ghana to provide its leadership role.

"It is therefore important that academic units are equipped with the requisite facilities that will enable students and teaching faculties to carry out research activities especially in ICT related fields that would propel the country to the 21st century technological development," he said.

The laboratory is equipped with 40 computers, switches, firewall software, projectors and furniture. In addition, the technology company also donated a 2 km fiber cable to the faculty to enhance internet connectivity and data transfer within the faculty.

This was part of the promise given to President John Atta Mills during his visit to Huawei in 2010 to equip three universities in Ghana with ICT laboratories.

Huawei had earlier donated similar facilities to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, and the University of Cape Coast, 144 km west of the capital Accra.

The company in March also handed over a hi-tech telepresence conference system to Ghana's Presidency for easy communication between the president and his appointees.
