Putian University, with a history of over 100 years, is in the downtown of Putian, a coastal city known as the birthplace of Mazu in central region of Fujian Province. In March 2002, the National Ministry of Education granted official approval to Putian University as a full-time undergraduate university. The University is a combination of former Putian College, Fujian Medical University (Putian Section) and Putian Huaqiao P.E. Normal School.  

The University has signed an agreement on cooperation with Xiamen University, getting all-round supports from Xiamen University on teaching and science research. Also, The University has reached agreements on teaching and science research cooperation with Southeast University, Lanzhou University, Fujian Agriculture And Forestry University, Fujian Medical University and Simon Fraser University in Canada, BSK International, Napier University in Britain, The University of Ballarat in Australia and International Taoyuan Association of Japan, National Hsinchu University of Education, Mingdao University, Chia Nan University of Pharmacy & Science, Chaoyang University of Technology, Hungkuang University，Chung Shan Medical University and China Medical University, Taiwan. The University attaches importance to the exchange with scholars, colleges and universities from both home and abroad. Also the university encourages the academic pacesetters and young or middle-aged core teachers to attend international academic conferences.

Putian is well-known as the hometown of oversea Chinese. The tradition of attaching great importance to education and schools passes from generation to generation. For many years, Putian people both at home and abroad have made enormous efforts in building the first University in Putian and donated 88 million Yuan to the campus infrastructure construction, the faculty building and the allocation of teaching resources of the university.

First, we are making efforts to pass the evaluation of National Ministry of Education. Second, we will concentrate on maintaining and strengthening the quality of undergraduate courses and become one of the first-rank universities in Fujian Province. Third, based on the high quality of undergraduate courses, we will apply for the approval of the establishment of postgraduate education courses.
